It was a close finish for the inaugural Sunday Age City2Sea presented by Westpac in Melbourne with Steve Kelly becoming the first-ever winner of the 14km event.

The event, which is the sister event to Sydney's Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac, recorded a sold out field of 13,000 registrations and has raised more than $400,000 for charity to date.

World Ironman champion Craig Alexander fired the starter’s gun, having just returned to Australia after winning his third Hawaiian Ironman title and smashing a 15-year race record.

“It's a great privilege to be part of this fantastic community focused event and I'm honoured to have been selected to officially start the first ever City2Sea,” said Craig Alexander.

Elite runners, joggers, walkers, pushers and community-minded families from around Australia crossed the starting line at the Arts Centre in Melbourne’s CBD and travelled along the scenic 14 km course to a spectacular finish by the sea in St Kilda.
